I had to write how the heart pumps blood through the circulatory system for a discussion post in my Anatomy and Physiology class and this is what I came up with, well roughly anyways... Enjoy!
(sorry that its 90 years long, but I hope you learn something!!)
Throughout time, man has searched the world over for wonderful and exciting places to visit, made lists of those places, and gone to extremes to prove that there is no place that we couldn’t go; when really we haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of “amazing” places. The body is one of the most amazing formations that you can find on the planet; it really is its own planet by its self. Think about it, every system in our body is like a city living on its own, but we need transportation, government, learning centers, grocery stores, factories, places to live, and everything that makes those comes from different places. Let’s have a look at the transportation side of things.
Like in all things there are different forms of transportation. Endocrine and exocrine glands distribute, and nerves carry the 911 calls of the body’s emergencies, but what about the daily “commute” as it were. The heart is the main hub of circulation, essentially it could be considered the central area, like downtown or a densely populated suburb, which is kind of fitting seeing as the heart is nearly center in your chest. The blood cells are like little cars, they begin their journey for the sake of this story in the bone marrow. Like a car factory, the bone marrow produces cells as the body needs them, usually on a regular pace, but with “depression”, rates of production can slow down. Once into the circulatory system the journey starts. Like most cities the heart has four sections, each area with its own label, and some areas never really interact, and when they do, everyone thinks something is wrong (which in the case of the heart would be true). The first place we will go is the right atrium. Directly off the “highways” so to speak, of the superior and inferior vena cavae. Tired, and a little blue from their long journey through the body, the blood cells wouldn’t mind getting changed and showered from their long day.
From the right atrium the blood hits a very quick red light at the tricuspid valve, so that traffic doesn’t get backed up, and into the right ventricle. With the next green light, the cell travels past the pulmonic semilunar valve, and into the main pulmonary artery, a one way street, that splits into two sections, the right and left pulmonary arteries. Although some may have preference, it doesn’t matter which way you go, the scenery doesn’t change too much, and you will find what you’re looking for. The pulmonary arteries lead to the pulmonary capillaries in another city, so to speak. The pulmonary capillaries are in the lungs, and it is here that they offer everything the cells could ever want.
The lungs are like a trading post of sorts, the tired out blood cells want food, and a change of clothes. You could also say that the lungs are like the spa for a blood cell, seeing as they enter tired and worn out, and leave with renewed vigour to take on the world again. They could also be considered a bank, where you exchange your bills (carbon dioxide) for money (oxygen). It is here that the blood trades all of the debris its collected through the day are scrubbed away, and new oxygen is picked up to be distributed to relatives in other cities (systems) along the way. After getting what they need from the lungs the blood cells leave the pulmonary capillaries and head into the four pulmonary veins. Again, the scenery might vary a little bit along the way but all pulmonary veins lead to the left atrium.
The left side of the heart is kind of like the nicer side of town, it only carries red blood cells, not the tired, dirty blue blood cells, while some would call this segregation, there really would be trouble if there was interaction! It can also be mentioned that the left side of the heart has thicker walls. This is because the pressure exerted to move the cells through the entire body, is much greater than that needed to move the blood to the lungs and a thinner muscle wall would wear out. The atrium goes through the green light of the bicuspid (or mitral valve), and into the left ventricle, where there is one last burst of energy as the cells pass the aortic semilunar valve, spin through the aorta, and onto the freeway as it were.
But what causes the green and red lights at the valves? The electrical company of the heart is known as the sinoatrial (SA) node. It has different sub companies known as the atrioventricular node (AV node), and the His-Purkinje system, these are all connected by the atrial conducting fibres, the bundle of his, and the perkinje fibres. The electrical impulse starts in the upper atrium, originating in the SA node, this impulse is called the cardiac impulse, and spreads from here to both atria through the atrial conducting fibres, to its sub company the AV node. The AV node is on the floor of the right atrium near the septum (or dividing wall of the heart). From the AV node, the impulse travels down the bundle of his, a slower conducting fibre, which gives the heart a chance to slow down for just a moment to allow the ventricle time to fill with blood from the atrial contraction. Once the signal has gone from the bundle of His, it separates into the Perkinje fibres where it moves incredibly fast to contract the ventricles.
Now back to our blood cell that’s cruising down the highway of the abdominal aorta. There are many ways the blood can travel, it can go to the brain via the carotid arteries, it can go into the arms through the axillary artery, it can branch off the abdominal aorta and into the renal artery to see the kidneys, the lumbar artery to go the lumbar region of the back, or the gonadal artery to the reproductive organs. These are just a few options but for this, were going to go to the common iliac artery and down into the leg, past the femoral artery, into the posterior tibial artery, and into the dorsalis pedis artery, which would be in the top of the foot. From the main artery would branch arterioles, smaller less elastic arteries, then into even smaller capillaries. Capillaries have many functions, not only are they the connection between arteries and veins, the way to the destination and the way home, they are also where the cells visit distant family and bring them the present of oxygen, and nutrients. Oxygen is kind of like money, you can’t do much without it these days, and if your body’s cells can’t get oxygen then they will die. The tissue our blood cell is visiting in the foot would give the blood carbon dioxide as a gift, since there really isn’t anything the blood can do with it, except give it to the lungs, it could be considered bills. Bills are something no one has a use for, so we carry them around until we get rid of them (or until we have to pay them). With that, the cell says good bye and leaves the foot tissue with its new, load, and just like bills, the cell is looking a little blue; although it’s because of the carbon dioxide and waste product more than anything. Like any good traveler the blood doesn’t take the same rout back to the heart but takes a more scenic route with more stops on the way back. From the capillaries, the blood travels through the venules, and then to the veins, the more main transportation of our return route. The veins are not quite as big as the arteries, and they are a little different, there are more stops in the veins because the blood cell is working its way back. Lining the veins are flaps that when the heart beats the pressure pushes the blood cell through, but when it contracts, the blood stops for just a second to snap a picture as it goes past the sciatic nerve. Without the flaps lining the veins the blood would just kind of slosh around, going forward and then back when we walked around, because gravity would not allow it to move back to the heart, the flaps cause the blood to stop and stay instead. The veins take different paths, but they all lead to the same place, the superior or inferior vena cavae, and into the right atrium. There are other things that travel through the blood, hormones, leukocytes, and platelets do as well, and they all go to different parts of the body, but their stories are for a different day!

Just a normal night on the job...
I currently work nights at a care home, Me, myself, and 13 residents. You would think that they would sleep through the night, but noooooooooooooooooooooooo, honestly its kind of like babysitting 13 kids, except their all over the age of 70... usually they are ok but tonight was just one of those nights...
When I arrived this evening, the day staff said there was a minor medical emergency, one resident had fallen (totally biffed it, bending her glasses too), and was going to need to go in for stitches... well that started it, because everyone was a little off after that...
Pat wouldnt change into her pj's until later, Margaret was concerned about the red light that kept going by her window (her window faces the back yard, and there was nothing there), and the "animal" that was at my feet (at least I didnt leave my dog behind this time), and didnt want her pills, but was concerned about my guy McMillian, apparently he was sick and she didnt want to catch it (BTW I currently do not know ANYONE named McMillian)... Anne was very upset and concerned for Agatha...
But I finally got everyone to bed, medications given, food prep done, and I was just sitting down to start working on school when Marjorie comes into the kitchen... Doesnt want anything, just wandering around she said.... So I put her back to bed, checked on Kate and Hugh (the one couple living here), and headed back to the kitchen... Not 20 minutes later, Marjorie comes back into the kitchen as happy as can be, just wanting to look around... It took longer to get her back to bed this time...
Then at about 10 Agatha got back, 3 stitches later, we got her pj's on and put her to bed. She is going to have one whopper of a black eye... but they did manage to fix her glasses... put her to bed, but left the light on for her,a nd the door open, she didnt want the dark tonight...
after that it was pretty quiet till about 2, when I did another check on everyone, Vivienne was up and thought she was going to throw up (just what I wanted to hear) so I ran and got her an ice cream pail, and then we got her back to bed... everyone was sleeping soundly, and I did my cleaning for the night.
I had a load of laundry in the washer, one in the dryer and the dishwasher going so I couldnt hear little noises, but I did hear something clang down stairs... so I went to investigate
Pat and May are watching the weather channel (the ONLY channel they ever want to watch down there, they will sit and watch it all day apparently), and chatting, so I went to put them back to bed, and I hear the noise again, and go to find Celina trying to make a U-turn in the bathroom with her wheelchair, and shes just not quite clearing the door, so she's doing the back and forth a little at a time to try and get herself out of there (think a teenager learning to paralell park, or reverse out of a parking space).... of course May has to see that celina gets back to bed, and tells Celina she shouldnt be out so late...
So now everyones back to bed, and I have about another 1/2 hour before I need to start making breakfast and getting everything ready for tomorrow... I cant wait to see what kind of stuff happens at breakfast...
Maybe it just seems funny to me, or maybe its the fact that its 430am, but I sometimes feel like im stuck in a really weird comedy... But its fun, and I have to say, quit any bad habits you have now, because when youre older, they come out with a vengence, but thats a post for another time...

Bubbles...
This always happens, I go for months without posting, then post like mad for a week, and then go away for a few months... Oh well, two posts in about one day here I come...
A couple months ago my younger sister wanted to change rooms, she has never had her room redecorated (as in chosen the theme herself... I have an odd way of redecorating and then some how switching rooms... Its weird, anyways...) so we were kind of hashing out ideas ect on what she would like to do.
SOME HOW, I am still unsure as to how, but somehow we managed to convince my parents to let us ALL switch rooms... it goes soemthing like this... I took EVERYTHING out of my room, including the stuff in my closet, and moved it to the dining room, the downstairs bedroom, the hallway upstairs, and I even have one of my organizer desk things in the upstairs bathroom, getting ready for church is a nightmare as all of my shoes and purses are in large rubbermaid tubs, instead of being organized and accessable in my closet...
With my things out of my room, it was empty to decorate, so we mudded, took down shelves, painted, and put in laminate flooring. Gary moved into there... leaving his room completely empty, and now we are decorating it for Bo... Same idea, mud walls, paint walls (and closet), do flooring, but we are also making additions to Bo's bed, painting it black, and we re did the organizer for her closet, as well as put in more lighting (one day in the next millennium I will post pictures). Anyways, because of these changes, her room is taking FOREVER to do, and I am still unable to find anything..... (and once Bo is finally done moving into what was Gary's room, I will get to redecorate her room and finally have everything in one place!!)
Now to get to the point of my post...
I have wanted a bubble bath for... Well about a month now, ever since we started changing rooms... I dont know why but ever since working at Lush 2 years ago (oh wow, 2 years already...) I have had sudden urges for bubble baths... So tonight at 11:54 I finally decided I wanted a bath, and did so... I have to say it was heavenly to relax with my book, (that had absolutley nothing to do with babies, birth, anatomy, physiology, or anything medicine) and just chill... Sometimes you just have to leave things, like laundry, the dishes, or in my case school, and do something for yourself... and I promise, the dishes, (and everything else) will probably still be there in the morning, I have yet to see mine wash themselves!

Only parts of the directions...
This summer has been well... pretty insane I think... not in the sense that Ive gone a lot of places, or done anything super special, but stuff is just happening; and while I have thought about it a bajillion times, I've never found the time to write... So where does one begin? I guess the beginning is kind of a good place to start...
Not too long after placing my last post in May, I was doing my younger sisters friends hair for church. We were chatting and Bo (my sister) mentioned something to Kerry (her friend) about working at her mom's care home. Kerry said her mom wasn't really looking for anyone to help out during the day, or come in to play instruments for the residents right now, but she was looking for someone to work nights. I kind of perked up at that, and thought "hey, I could do that". I mentioned my interest, and we headed off to church.
At church through service I noticed my eye was itchy. Like insanely itchy, I don't think its ever been that itchy before. The next morning it was still itchy and when I pulled down my lower eyelid (by the tear duct) where it was bothering me the most, I could see a yellowish spot by the tear duct that was surrounded by red. The other side looked just normal. So I scheduled a doctors appointment.
I have really known my doctor since conception. He was there at my birth, and I can count the times that I have gone to a clinic because he wouldn't squeeze us in, on about 2 fingers, I really love my doctor because he would rather try to let things take their course instead of prescribe prescribe prescribe!!! I went in to see him, told him the problem, he took a look, said it was an irritation of some sort, that we would never know the cause, it would go away in a few days, and if it didn't, then come back and he would check it and get me drops. Then while there are 3 or 4 people in the waiting room, he sits and chats with me about school. "What are you doing?" "What are you planning to take?" etc.
At this point I had no idea... Nada, zip, nothing... I told him that I was interested in sign language, and was considering taking the teachers aid (TA) course this fall at SIAST. He kind of looked at me, told me that was great (in the same voice your Grandmother uses when she is happy that you've finally done something but thinks you could have made a better or wiser decision to better impact your future, but she will never tell you to your face only continually suggest other things you could be doing in addition to what you've already decided).
There was a slightly awkward pause as I added that I was kind of getting TA certificate at SIAST because I wanted to do SOMETHING other than work at Superstore for the rest of my life. Then he looked at me and said, "Carlee, you're smart, why don't you go into medicine".
I kind of wiggled uncomfortably and looked at the magazine rack on the wall... I don't really like medicine, yeah I have had people ask me for as long as I can remember if I am going to be a nurse like my mom when I grow up. But It just didn't appeal to me, neither did being a doctor... I KNOW me... I would spend 11 years getting schooled and specialized in one area, and then decide I didn't like it and try some other area, I would ALWAYS be in school, and I don't want that.
So I said I would think about it, he seemed as happy as a grandmother who hears the same thing, and I left his office the wheels in my head spinning furiously as I thought about other options. The wheels kept spinning furiously for about 2 more days.
Thursday at work, I happened to look at the front page of the newspaper as I was stacking baskets at the door. The front page headline? "Midwifery in Saskatchewan Celebrates its Second Anniversary". Cool, I thought. So I read more, there is no school here but I can do it online? I would be working with moms and babies?! Its a job in demand as more people go 'natural' in their medicine choices?!?!?!
I couldn't wait to get off of work to go home and research, and research I did. I found a school online called Aviva institute that offers a long distance program that was as rigorous as any college course, but available online, I wouldn't have to move, and I could fit school around my schedule, not fit work around school...
The following week I also got in touch with Kerry's mom and scheduled an interview with her. She hired me on the spot, and I began training the following week.
NOW, I have since learned that there are a few hiccups with school. I will have to do some moving, or else get really creative, because technically its illegal for me to do my practicum here (insurance issues because of government policy), but I don't have to worry about that for a whole year. I do like working nights, but its hard to schedule things, I don't have much of a sleep system anymore, and it can be stressful with one of me and 13 residents to care for; but it's truly amazing how quickly life can change from being unsure, to hanging on as things begin to advance at warp speed.
I signed up for my summer pre requisite courses, and sent in my application, had my interview via Skype, and am currently waiting for an acceptance letter.
While I don't know where all this direction with school can take me, or the doors it will open, I know that I am learning patience, albeit at a frustratingly slow pace. See, I'm starting to realize that I need to take a step back, instead of jumping in the middle of the river and trying to do my own thing. There are a lot of things this year that make me realize that I need to be patient. I need to take things as they come instead of trying to make them work. God knows what I need and when, so why do I worry so much about bills, choices, relationships, school, decisions, timings? It probably has a lot to do with being human, but I think it also has a lot to do with trust. I need to realize that I just have to trust in him instead of putting it all together myself. I know God already has everything in my life planned out already, I need him to lead me instead of trying to lead him and tell him what I need.
Its funny but I've come to realize that if I think its right, I'm usually wrong. And, while I have only part of the directions currently, I know that I don't have to worry... The rest are coming, and when they get here I'll totally understand the when, whys, how's, and what in the worlds, but for now I'm going to try and relax and go with the flow of things.
And as a side note, while I didnt get to go to PEAK this year, or my own district camp, because of how difficult and intense my courses have proved to be, (among other things), I also realize that I can't always do what I want, and I figure if I give up one opportunity, there has to be something else down the road that I will get to do instead...
